Xpcproxy is constantly eating up my processor. I know it's related to the Photos app, and runs in the background...when it wants to, but a consistent use of anywhere from 40% - 240% of processor usage when the app isn't even open?!

What gives?!

If you are still having problems, try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.

Safe Mode - About

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. If the log won’t post, try posting it in Pastebin and provide a link in a reply        Pastebin

Malwarebytes can be useful. There are no viruses in the wild for macOS, but there is malware... adware, trojans, etc. Those are not viruses, but use social engineering and trickery to get you to install them. If you use common sense, you shouldn't really have to worry about those.

Unfortunately, if you google virtually any windows or mac executable or process name, you're going to come up with a web site that will try to convince you it's a virus and push their worse than garbage cleaning software to get rid of it. It's just the nature of the internet these days...

Let it run for a while and see if it settles down. Not knowing exactly what your situation is (recent upgrade, etc.) It's hard to say exactly what it's working on, but it's not malicious.
