The sleep indicator was removed quite a long time ago. I know the problem you are talking about. I was a bit concerned when the sleep indicator was removed. But I haven’t had any sleeping issues on any new machines in several years.
It’s funny though. I still have a 2008 machine I use for testing. It is stuck on 10.11. It does have a sleep indicator and it needs it. I can’t leave it running over the weekend. Every Monday morning, that thing is dead and the fans are running full blast. I have no idea what the problem is. But newer machines don’t have that problem.
I’m a service provider, And I’ve seen and read online many occasions the MacBook fails to go to sleep for a hardware issues.. In the past we used to wait for the ambient light to come On.
In the past that happened every morning. Still does.
