Quit install high sierra os application?

Trying to install High Sierra I get message: macOS could not be installed on your computer. The path/System/Installation/Packages/OSinstall.mpkg appears to be missing or damaged. Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again.

I have an iMac 2011. Tried force shutdown, but each time it reopens it is still trying to install the update and goes to the same message in a loop. Please can you advise what to do? Thanks

The copy of the macOS High Sierra installer you have seems to be damaged or incomplete and needs to be trashed before you can download a fresh copy. Try this: Go to your Applications Folder find the macOS High Sierra Installer and drag it to the Trash. Enter your administrative password to trash it. Download a fresh copy of the macOS High Sierra installer and run it. Use the link below to download the macOS High Sierra installer.

The installer should be sitting quietly in your Applications folder.

Verify you are not trying to use the very small stub installer some ~19 MB in size.

The full installer is 5-6 GB in size.

The stub is more of a place holder. If this is what you have delete the stub and empty the trash.

and try again. High Sierra https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/macos-high-sierra/id1246284741?ls=1&mt=12

If you stll have issues boot into SafeBoot  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

to download and run the installer.

Takes noticeable longer to get to the login screen, does a 5-10 minute disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches, dynamic loader cache, etc. get cleared and rebuilt.
