iPad Mini 2 headphone jack
Anyone know if the 3.5mm headphone jack socket on the iPad Mini2 is optical ? It seems to be on MacBooks with the 3.5mm socket, but I cant find any definitive answer about the iPad 2.

Absolutely, catagorically, the 3.5mm TRRS headphone jack on all iPad devices have only electrical contacts.
Unlike some Apple devices that will accept a 3.5mm optical TOSLINK adapter, iPad and iPhone do not support this feature.
A possble and effective solution/workaround, for your need, might be to use an Apple Airport Express - if you can find one - and use it as an AirPlay client.
The Apple Airport Express is not just a very capable WiFi router, but also has the coveted 3.5mm TOSLINK port that you seek. This would allow you to effectively output a multi-channel audio stream from any iOS device that supports AirPlay, to your DAC. The Express can not only be used as a [WiFi] router, or network extender, but can also be configured simply as an Ethernet and/or AirPlay client.
Unfortunately, unless you already possess one, you’re unlikely to find a brand new device as Apple discontinued them sometime last year - but they can still be found on some of the popular auction sites. If going down this route, look for Apple Airport Express 802.11n (Second Generation).
These superb little boxes are incredibly flexible with a unique feature set. Note - the later Airport Extreme (also now discontinued by Apple) does not include the 3.5mm jack - or AirPlay. Only the Express has these features.
Hope you find this helpful.
I'm pretty positive the answer is no, it's a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.

This has nothing to do with the OP's question. Instead of posting to an unrelated thread, post your question in a new thread.
That's a shame as I wanted to connect the iPad to a DAC via the 3.5mm jack, leaving the lightening port solely for charging it.

Many thanks. The other alternative I have discovered is to bluetooth to a DAC. There lots of good one available such are Arcam for around £150GBP which should improve the sound quality and compensate for the quality loss over bluetooth. I'll pay my local hi-fi store a visit this week and let you know the outcome.
