Replaced battery failing after 6 months

Hello to whoever reads this and thanks for any advice. I had my battery replaced late 2018. My iPhone was nearing the 2 year old mark and I wanted to take advantage of the battery replacement program before my Apple Care ran out. I had read all the reports about battery throttling and it spooked me into action. I figured that a replacement battery would give me the opportunity to use this device confidently for a few more years. Low and behold, the replaced (2nd) battery is far worse than the original battery. Sudden unexplainable energy drops, shutdowns, nonsensical stats in the battery usage graphs, none of these issues occurred with the original battery but now plague my iPhone. I called support and the technician said that I need a new battery as it did not pass a diagnostic test. Since the current battery is only 6 months old, isn't that an indication of a faulty repair? Am I being fleeced here? Should a purchase a new battery and run the risk of another problem a few months from now OR research the market for a new device now. Thank you, any advice is much appreciated.

Take your phone back to the store that did the replacement and see what they have to say; there may be an issue with your phone's charging circuitry that is causing the battery issues.

It's kind of a fuzzy area.

If your phone was under warranty or you have an AppleCare+ agreement and the battery was replaced for free, your phone (and the new battery) continue to be covered under your original phone warranty (or AppleCare+ policy.

If you paid for a new battery, I suspect it would be covered by Apple's 90 day repair warranty:

Took the device back to the Apple Store where the battery was replaced. I mentioned your advice about the phone's charging circuitry. He said that someone giggled the phone to test if something was loose and found that there was nothing wrong. (Didn't open phone) He then mentioned that the problem was probably software related and suggested that I turn off all background app refreshes. I followed the advice but still feel that I am getting ignored considering my first battery worked far better than this new replacement battery. Anything else I can do? I do not want to pay for a new battery only to have this same issue happen again a few months later. Thank you for your help.

Return and restate your concern.

Ask to speak to the service and/or store manager if required.

Make sure they know the history of the phone and battery replacements, and remind them that since the new battery is under warranty, you would like it serviced as it is not performing as the original battery did.

Thank you for your continued response. Are you telling me that the new battery is under warranty? Both the Apple phone support and the in store tech claimed otherwise, and I definitely felt that a new part, albeit a replacement part, most likely fell under some warranty. This is all so convoluted - thanks for your help.

The serviced iPhone battery that was replaced definitely has a 90-day repair warranty which in your case is now expired. Unless they do something special / exceptional for you, it is indeed out of warranty and would be a paid $49 expense at the Apple store to get it serviced again. Although these batteries usually give you a solid couple years of life in them, they can fail sooner.

If you happened to have reported any of the problems within that first 90-days though you would have a better chance of getting some kind of exception made. You'll want to weigh the cost of replacing the battery yet again versus the trade-in value and upgrading to a newer iPhone.
