airpods animation not showing for pairing for iphone 6

Hi, i have connected my airpods to my phone but i didnt get the pop up animation stating the battery status of my airpods and i had to manually pair them through bluetooth anyway when i first got them because no animation popped up when i opened the lid. can someone tell me why thank you
