Safari Quit

Safari continues to open regardless of force quitting, shutting down - just starts right back up. This is on a MacBook Pro.

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities Bhinn9088,

If I'm understanding you right, Safari keeps opening on its own on you MacBook Pro even after force-quitting the app. I have some steps I would like for you to try to stop this from happening further.

First, it may help to know what exactly Safari is opening. Does it open to a specific webpage each time it opens? If so, is it a webpage you've visited before? Next, let's check some of your settings to see if they are causing this behavior.

Safari Extensions:

  1. With Safari open, go to Preferences > Extensions.
  2. Uncheck each extension listed there, and then force quit Safari. If Safari doesn't open again on it's own, we know one of the extensions is the culprit. Move on to the next section of troubleshooting if the issue is still present, otherwise go to the next step.
  3. Open Safari > Preferences > Extensions, and put a check next to the first extension in the list. Force-close Safari to test it. Do this for each extension until you’ve identified which one is causing the issue, and then uninstall that extension by selecting the Uninstall option under the name of the extension in Preferences. If you see any extensions listed there that you don't recall installing, feel free to uninstall those as well.

Login Items:

  1. Select the little  in the upper-left corner of your screen, and then select System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items.
  2. If there is a closed lock icon in the bottom-left corner, click on it and enter your password when prompted.
  3. Uncheck all of your login items, and then force-quit Safari to test the issue. If the issue is no longer present, go to step 4.
  4. Put a checkmark next to each item in the list, force-quitting Safari after each one.
  5. Once you've identified which login item is causing the issue, remove it by selecting it in the list (it should be highlighted once it's selected) and then select the minus sign.

If neither Safari Extension nor Login Items are causing Safari to open on its own, check to see malware may be causing the issue. First, make sure you're running the latest version of macOS Mojave (10.14.4). You can check by following the steps here: How to update the software on your Mac. After that, check your Applications folder to see if you have any applications you don't expect, and then uninstall them with steps under the "Uninstall apps" section here: Install and uninstall apps from the Internet or disc on Mac. If your MacBook was already running the latest version of Mojave, or you uninstalled some unwanted applications, restart your Mac next and test out Safari again.

If the issue persists after you've followed all of these steps, respond back with your answer to my question about what webpage is opening in Safari.
