Red Exclamation point on up Imessage

The exclamation is on my iPad. It was initially on my iPhone as well. But I resent the message and it cleared the exclamation on iPhone but not on iPad. I have deleted all messages. Turned notifications for iMessage off and on. Followed by a restart. I have also turned off and on iMessage app. Again restarting. Very frustrating. Any suggestions appreciated
