Music file copying from Mac to iPhone

Trying to copy music files from Mac iTunes library to iPhone 6, with music previously loaded onto Mac from a flashdrive. Music is purchased from iTunes on another Mac. Problem appears when dragging the music files from Mac library to the synced iPhone. Files don't copy and a message appears that the files don't exist, plus each music filed is then preceded by a circled exclamation symbol? Tried several attempts, with same results.

The reason I can think of is if you have your iTunes preferences set to not copy the music track to your iTunes Library when you add music to your computer. The entry you then see in iTunes is to the music file on the stick drive you used, not to a copy actually on the computer. iTunes won't realize this until you try to do something with the file such as copy it somewhere and only then will show the ! = can't find the file.
