airpods won't connect

I got airpods 1 week ago and at first they connected to both my phone and computer right away. I just turned off bluetooth on my phone when I was on my Mac. For the past 2 days my Airpods will not connect to my Mac. I have forgotten the device and tried to re-set it up many times, and it will not work. My computer will say they are connected, but the sound still plays out loud. I don't know why it won't work, and my computer is up to date. This is very frustrating.
