To partially clear map directions, toggle from button "directions" to "search". The directions and search buttons are on the upper left of the screen.
Ok, so I cleared bookmarks and recents. Directions still showed. Selected search, then back. No luck.
Then I selected a new destination. The old route then disappeared from the screen, finally.
The new destination pin was blue, the old one red. While I was not able to select the red pin and choose delete, the blue pin allows for deletion.
As to my second question, I am not finding how to turn off the GPS blue pulsing locator?

You can turn off location services to get rid of the pin and circle. Settings, General, Location services = off.
Or you can just ignore it. When you reposition the map, it will turn the pulsing circle off and leave the pin. The pin will not be in the view once you move the map by dragging.
