It's post warranty, intend to travel in couple of months so don't want a brand new phone yet and don't want a plan with a phone network either as I may be overseas longer than planned. What are the best affordable options?

Go to an Apple Retail Store and use their payment options. I doubt they finance repairs, but it will be your only option.

Or go to your bank or credit union and borrow the money. Any finance plan at an Apple Store will be via a credit card.
Is there a payment plan option to repair phones? I prefer not to use credit cards
