Apple Watch vibrates when not on wrist

My Apple Watch 2 vibrates (when notifications are received -- in this case emails) when it's not on my wrist. This just started after I updated to WatchOS 5.2. Wrist detection is turned on, and otherwise appears to work -- when it's off my wrist, I'm locked out and have to provide my passcode. Any idea why this is happening, and how I can make it stop?

It turned out the problem was something entirely different. My iPhone was trying to tell me something.; namely, that it was running out of storage. Remedying that problem seems to have made the watch notifications go away. If that's indeed what was causing the vibrations, it would have been helpful for the watch to display a message about the problem on the phone, but there was no such message. (There was a message on the phone, but it took me a while to notice it.)
