Can't type into Safari unless I open a second tab

Safari v12.1

Mojave 10.14.4

Mid 2014 21.5" iMac

Most of the time when I open Safari I can't type into a dialogue box. This happens when I open Google or any other website. If I then open a second tab everything works fine. If I go back to the first tab it still won't work. I can right click into a dialogue box and paste some text and search on it but whatever page opens I still can't type into a dialogue box.

I've cleared the Safari cache and most cookies but still no joy.

Any ideas folks?

       Restart the router.

       Startup in Safe Mode.    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

       Launch Safari to test.

Restart normally by clicking the “Restart” button at the bottom.

Launch Safari holding the shift key down.

       Turn off extensions and test.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues.

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. If the log won’t post, try posting it in Pastebin and provide a link in a reply        Pastebin
