I receive a notification for incoming texts on CarPlay but when I press down to have it read, nothing happens. It used to work fine with my iPhone 7, but doesn’t work with my XS. It also doesn’t work in my wife’s 2018 Audi Q7. I have an Apple Watch (gen 1) and have seen some posts related to notifications but that’s not my issue.

Make sure that you don't have Do Not Disturb while Driving turned on. Also, you can remove the vehicle from the settings in CarPlay on the phone and then try setting it back up again. See if that helps.
Try resetting your watch by pressing in the crown and side button until you see the Apple logo, then release both. ( I am assuming you have the latest software updates on both your iPhone and Watch).
Check with the dealer to see if there is some way to reset the vehicle's radio. I connect my iPhone XS with iOS 12.2 to my wife's 2017 Hyundai and I have the Series 4 Watch. I have not experienced any issues with CarPlay or notifications. If everything seems to be working fine when not connected to CarPlay, then try troubleshooting the vehicle too.
Do Not Disturb While Driving was not on. Removed vehicle and restarted my phone. Same issue. I did notice that if I ask Siri to read messages from a specific user, it will, but it picks a random message to start from. It doesn’t start from the last message first.
I reset the watch but that didn’t change anything. Both my watch and iPhone have the latest software updates. CarPlay will not read or display any messages. Any other suggestions?
