AirPod Case Charging Issue

Ok, this is really weird. I bought u used set of AirPods. The seller mentioned he had trouble getting the case to charge. It was hit and miss. Sure enough, the case did not want to charge. This is where it gets weird. Pods charged to 100% no problem. I discovered quite by accident that if I left the lid open, with the pods in it, the case charged fully. What the heck! Anyone else have this issue?
