My iPhone XS Max 256GB doesn't always detect an audio output plugged into the Lightning port. Turning the phone on and off again works temporarily, but after plugging and unplugging, the phone won't recognize the audio output again. Can someone please help? Thank you.

have you tried plug it to another output source?

settings>> general>> reset>> reset all settings
I have tried other output sources, with varying success. The most maddening part is the relative unpredictability of the problem. Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn't. But I'll try your settings suggestion the next time it occurs. Thanks for your prompt reply.
