iCloud Drive is an off-site storage, but not a backup.

when you store documents on iCloud Drive, they are hosted on Apple's servers and mirrored on your mac. Since you will be working with these documents and data, it will not be a backup but your working copies. You will still need a local backup on some external drive at home. But nevertheless will it be very useful to have your documents and data on iCloud Drive. If your Mac is damaged, lost, or stolen, you can restore your documents and data from iCloud to your new Mac. and it is easy to keep several devices in sync. But iCloud cannot protect you from user errors, if you accidentally delete important documents.
