I deleted my gmail archive yesterday and all my mail was wiped. I have a previous time machine backup on an external drive. How do I restore that to my MacBook Air?

Were they local mailbox archive or server mailboxes? Have you checked the gmail site to see if they were there?
Enter TM while the Mail application is active. Go back in time until your mailboxes that you wiped are showing with the messages. And Restore from there.
