Connecting macbook pro to blue tooth speaker

When I try to connect my laptop to my JBL blue tooth speaker, the speaker recognizes the connection, the computer says I am connected, but the speaker stays mute. Is this a problem with the computer, with High Sierra, or something else? Will it be resolved if I upgrade to Mojave?

The JBL works fine with the iPad.

Thanks.

The appropriate sound device must be selected, either in the menu bar:

or in System Preferences:

then adjust the output volume using the keyboard keys (F11 and F12)
