Can you somehow escape a boot loop? Or can you exit recovery mode?

If your device is repeatedly cycling through the Apple logo but failing to boot correctly, either there is not enough charge in the battery to support the reboot (put it on charge with a known good Apple power adapter and cable) -or- it has a problem which needs hands on support from Apple Service.
