May I get and use iCloud backup without paying? New things are happening so fast it is hard to keep up..

In its basic version iCloud is free, with storage of 5GB. If that will cover your email, contacts, calendars, and also your backups then you won't need to pay anything: but there's a good chance you will sooner or later need more storage. You can upgrade to 50GB for $0.99 per month.
