high sierra problems

Hello.. on a Mac Pro 2010 server, 32 Gb ram, SSD system drive. Running Yosemite flawlessly until recently, and just upgraded to High Sierra in order to use latest version of apps like fCPX. Everything is suddenly slowed down like mud on it's boots and I'm getting fluctuation in drive capacity available, between 97Gb to 110Gb, though tends to stay at the lower end.. This can fluctuate from one minute to the next.

Although I have heard of this happening to others I have never experienced it before in twenty years of using Macs.. and as I say until I upgraded to High Sierra..

Clean My Mac X scan shows only 1.8Gb system clutter.. Any help much appreciated..

Mac Pro, macOS 10.13

There will always be tales of Macs running slow on all OS's, I don't think it is a particular issue with High Sierra. I have a 2010 MacPro running El Capitan, Sierra, High Sierra and Mojave, it runs all of them well and as quickly as each other.

Have you recently just installed High Sierra, and do you have a lot of hard disks, either internal or external attached to your MP, it could be possible that Spotlight is taking a long time to index your drives and this might account for the slow down.

When you upgraded to High Sierra did you check that third party apps you use have updates available so they will run optimally under High Sierra.

Still though I would keep CMM of your Mac, was this version of CMM High Sierra compatible, if not it might have been deleting/ quarantining vital system files, if an older version of CMM is being used it might not recognise the subtle differences in system file names or locations in HS and just deletes them, so maybe that is the cause of your slow down. Have you run Disk Utility> first Aid on your disk?

.. as I suspected, uninstalling CMM has made little difference.. but your Spotlight suggestion sounds good.. I am running 4 extra well loaded internal drives, plus the system SSD. As I very rarely use Spotlight will minimise it's searches if possible.

Incidentally I would have stayed with Sierra, as I can still run Photoshop and an older version of FCPX on that, with ease, but the Sierra version of Mac Mail had a persistent problem dealing with attachments.. so might just go back to Sierra and try another mail client?

Ok you have been lucky, try an experiment, follow CleanMyMacs instructions for fully uninstalling CMM, just deleting it will not do. Restart your Mac, see if it runs any better. Macs do not need any apps that proclaim to clean or optimise your Mac, and certainly no anti-virus is necessary, stay on top of malware with Malwarebytes, there is a free version. If you still have problems you may want to download and run, http://etrecheck.com. This app is used often in these communities to help in troubleshooting Macs. No it was the latest Mojave compatible CMM version.. only a pre-purchase trial which didn't delete anything anyway.. and an uneeded expense for me to buy at this stage..

Have run all the disk utility/first aid checks and everything is fine.. perhaps I've just been spoiled by how fast and efficiently Yosemite ran on this machine.. though you say you find no difference between all four OS's?

It would seem that your Spotlight suggestion is spot on.. so thank you for your time and trouble..
