itunes cannot add any songs to the iphone

"iTunes cannot add any songs because no songs can be played on this iPhone".

Some of the songs in my playlist are already added to the iPhone, some newer ones are not.

The newly added ones are converted using iTunes from CD audio to AAC VBR or "Apple lossless audio".

I have checked the option to "Convert higher bitrate audio to 128kbps" and it's still not working.

From Apple’s own info and as you have discovered it appears while iTunes supports and in fact rips in AAC VBR, iDevices do not support it’s play back.

Must admit I wouldn’t have known that with having to dig around!

If you are certain the “format” is compatible then it could either be the iPhone, iTunes or a hardware issue (eg. cable).

Force Restart the iPhone and make sure it’s up to date, then check iTunes and see if there any software updates. If you have a spare cable try that and plug in to a different port.

You could at one time drag the file from Finder direct to the iDevice in the iTunes Sidebar, in other words the content didn’t need to be in the iTunes Music Library, if it works then that would indicate a iTunes issue and not file format or iPhone problem.

Not sure if this discussion is of use, but might be worth a read just in case you recognise any similarities.

Hope some of the above helps.

The problem is that only "some" of the files that I am trying to transfer are not compatible, but iTunes does not say which files! So, I had to guess that some of the the M4A files that were ripped with iTunes as "variable bitrate AAC" were not actually compatible with my iPhone SE. So I used a format converter to convert from "AAC VBR" to "MP3 VBR" and the iPhone could accept the files.

The conclusion is that iTunes has an useless error message, Apple software is supposed to be easy to use. It should contain a hint of what's really wrong with those files.
