Itunes doesn't recognise external CD player

Hi Everyone. I have a new computer and a new external CD drive. I think I have installed the CD drive correctly but I have also installed Nero 12 software which I didn't realise was not needed. Anyway, I cannot get itunes to recognise a CD when inserted in the external CD drive. The help I have spotted on google says that I should go to Edit>Preferences>General and I will get import selections for importing CDs but I don't get that.
