Bought a used Apple wireless keyboard (A1314) and want to restore to factory settings

I bought a used Apple wireless keyboard (A1314). I am attempting to pair it to my mac desktop but I already have an old Apple wireless keyboard (same model A1314) paired to it. I think I might be getting the bluetooth application confused but not sure. When I attempt to enter an access code from the newest (used) keyboard it is not recognizing that I'm entering the numbers and I keep getting a "failed to pair" message. This new (used) keyboard is named "System Administrator keyboard" by the previous owner. I would like to just restore it to factory settings and attempt all of this as if it were a new keyboard which has never been paired or named.

Any suggestions?

Resetting the keyboard as you would like to do is a little complicated.

  • First, power down the keyboard by holding its power button depressed until its little green LED extinguishes. That takes about three seconds.
  • Then, open Bluetooth Preferences either by selecting that option in the Mac's Bluetooth menu icon. If that icon is not present, open System Preferences > Bluetooth. Keep that Preference pane open.
  • Press the keyboard's power button and keep it depressed. Do not release it.
  • A six digit pairing code will appear in Bluetooth Preferences. Press those numeric keys in sequence followed by the Return key as shown.
  • You can now release the power button.
  • To rename the keyboard, two-finger tap (or control-click) the keyboard name in Bluetooth Preferences. A dropdown menu will appear. One of its options is Rename.
