Returning to grey screen at startup issue

I have started up my G4 powerbook and am met with a blank grey screen.

I had previously been using the laptop for connecting to a projector for a presentation and having been met with this problem I reconnected the laptop to a projector and the image of the desktop was viewable on the projector screen and thus I could manage the laptop via this. How can I get the screen on the laptop back to where it should be that I can see the what I am doing?

I am sure its something obvious and possibly relating to screen sharing or such like but I cannot think of the solution just now. Any thoughts?

After a moments clarity I realise that I had in fact a dvi monitor which I have connected the laptop up to so it is now easier for me to see if I can try to resolve this.

When connected to the monitor then I can use the laptop and manage the system preferences etc. When I do the display mirroring then the image is not switching between the default monitor view and the laptop desktop but just changes to different screen size with the same image.

Does this make sense?

Here is what I see in the info about the G4

The graphic card is still recognised. Could it be that the actual connection between the graphics card and the actual screen is blown? Any insights would help.

If you have a usable display on the external, and moving the built-in display won't change what is (or isn't) on the screen, then these remain as suspects:

  • failed display
  • failed display cable
  • failed inverter (definition)

However, failed inverters usually produce a black screen.

The good news is your graphics chipset (it's not a "card" in a Mac notebook) and logic board appear OK.

This site may give you some idea of the issues with "surgery" you mention.

Thank you for your response.

There is no signs of life other than the grey screen. I have tried wobbling the laptop and moving the lid about but there is no sign of any activity.

I had been thinking that this might be an option to consider but when I checked out a fixit guide to accessing the video cable I sort of hoped I didn't have to go through it as it looks like a complete take a part of the machine! A good few hours of work I reckon. Major surgery!

I guess its knowing what connections there are between the motherboard/graphic card and the display other than the data cable and the power cable.

However I guess in the absence of any other options at the moment then I guess I shall just need to clear the diary and go for it.

This was my earlier thread on this which I couldn't add a reply to for some reason:

Thanks for this. Thats a bit reassuring.

I shall make space in the day to get into this.

As I mentioned it is in such a good condition and I would be using it still but for this issue.

I shall give it a go in the hope that I just find a loose connection rather than a damaged one.

The taking apart is a challenge but the re-assembling is the tough bit I find in such cases.

I shall update here as a matter for record.
