MacBook Bluetooth connection failed, status: 0x22

I am getting this error message when trying to pair with a particular bluetooth headphone. The pairing is established for a second or two and then aborts. The Bluetooth Explorer shows this error message:

Process: Bluetooth Explorer 6.0.9

Operating System: Version 10.14.4 (Build 18E226)

Date: 2019-05-09 10:46:58 +0000

Initializing Bluetooth...

Bluetooth Support Initialization complete.

AKG Y100 WIRELESS connected, handle: 0xD

2019-05-09 10:48:54 +0000 Handle: 0xD disconnected, reason: 0x22

AKG Y100 WIRELESS disconnected

(null) connection failed, status: 0x22

Error 0x22 translates to kBluetoothHCIErrorLMPResponseTimeout.

The headphones work seamlessly with iphone X and Windows 10 PC. (They also work together with a Windows 10 installation that I have on this MacBook in a separate boot partition. The problem therefore seems not hardware related).

Did try all standard remedies (delete com.apple.bluetooth.plist, reset bluetooth, remove devices, no USB devices and so on...)

Any ideas for fixes? Maybe the MacOS 10.14.4 is a bit too restrictive on the LMP response timeout? Any way to change this parameter?
