I have been trying to empty the trash for 3 days now. Mojave 10.14.14. The trashing shows
"Emptying the Trash..." "803,004 items deleted. How can I get this to actually delete? It's been going on for days now. The # of items deleted keeps going up.

It sounds like you tried manually deleting Time Machine backups which you should never do. Your best bet is to turn off Time Machine and erase the backup drive then reset Time Machine.
I did. My bad. How you delete old backups? Thanks for the answer. Right now in the process of running data protection on my Drobo which is where my back ups go.
