You can continue to run Malwarebytes in the free mode. The paid mode is only if you want it to run in the background all the time. It's not necessary to run in the background like that. If you think you've gotten some malware or ad ware run it manually.
regarding the answer from leroydouglas (below) - the utility he recommended resolved my issue - I downloaded it today 7/13/19 and I am no longer redirected to bing. I downloaded their free trial (for 14 days, then $39.99/year)

Anyone know who wrote the adware. It seems a bit cheeky even for MS to do but I don’t see who else could benefit.
I use Bing in place of G***le now anyway.
