GPS Stopped working on my OLD iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4S

The GPS stopped working on my OLD iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4S. Apple Maps and "Find My iPhone" worked fine until recently. Has anyone else had this problem with their OLD iPhones?

Possible causes and questions below:

  1. Recently, moved SIM (T-Mobile) from iPhone 3GS to newer Android phone and back. Is it possible that T-Mobile change the setting on my SIM card when I put the SIM card in the Android phone? NOTE: GPS works with the same SIM card in an iPhone 5S, so the problem seems to be with 3GS / 4S.
  2. Recently (Apr 6, 2019), the GPS system had the equivalent of an Y2K event. Could the old iOS 6.1.6 software or old iPhone GPS hardware/firmware been affected?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

@Dr.Ripco thank you for your useful feedback. I too have noticed that the Weather App has stopped working. So you are implying that it is the software, namely iOS 6 that is the problem, not the hardware.

Here is an partial list of apps/features that do NOT work on iOS 6

  1. Weather App
  2. Apple Maps
  3. "Find my iPhone"
  4. WeChat

Google Maps may work. I need to verify. Without a SIM, I am getting an "Location could not be determined" error in Google Maps.

I just checked and Google Maps does NOT work for me. With a SIM in the phone on the EDGE network (3G turned OFF in Settings > General > Carrier), my location on the Google Maps and Apple Maps is about 5 miles NW of my actual location. When on the 3G network, Google Maps shows my OLD location and Apple Maps displays an "Cannot Determine Location" error.

Updated list of apps/features that DO NOT WORK on iOS 6

  1. Weather App
  2. Apple Maps
  3. Google Maps
  4. "Find my iPhone"
  5. WeChat

Yeah, it’s dead.

I have a 3gs that I use mostly for podcasts, no cell service, just wifi and apple maps doesn’t work anymore.

”Cannot determine location”

It’s not the gps, y2k bit, google maps still work, can even get directions.

First the weather app now this.

Ok, sort of figured it out.

It does appear the satellite based GPS on the iPhone 3gs does NOT work anymore.

The Google Maps appears to work because I forgot about it being able to use this system of mapped wifi routers if you were on a non-GPS device. Even really old devices like an iPod gen 2 (wifi only) still work using that.

So it appears the 3gs is just falling back to that. It's not really any good for navigation but if enough wifi routers are in the area, it can at least give you an approximate location.

I don't think there is a point listing apps that don't work anymore, be it'll be easier to say "most of them". Or just list the ones that seem to work.

I'm sure the 3gs is as solid as the day it was built but with ios6 not being updated, it stays the same as the world changes around it.
