missing playlists and such

Went to iTunes on my Windows desktop, and all playlists have disappeared, and all purchased files look like they have not been downloaded, and only 40 non-iTunes files appear under Songs. This from a collection of 7000 songs (which are still on my drive) that have been rated, grouped, and generally managed over many years. On iTunes 12.9.4.104; Windows 10 is up to date; fairly powerful PC, and no recent PC trauma. Why? How hard to recover?

Windows, Windows 10

Hello Sturgis85,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. It sounds like music and playlists are no longer appearing in iTunes. It's never any fun losing all that work, but you've reached the right place for help.

Here are some suggestions:

  1. Since these are purchased from iTunes, see if you can simply redownload them from from the Store: Redownload apps, music, movies, TV shows, and books from the App Store, iTunes Store, and Apple Books - Apple Support
  2. For your playlists, if you have a backup iTunes Library file, you can try restoring it:

Restore your library from a backup

You can restore your iTunes library or iTunes Media folder from your external drive to your computer. If you're restoring an iTunes Library from a different computer, make sure that your new computer has the latest version of iTunes.

  1. Quit iTunes.
  2. Locate your external drive.
  3. Mac: On the Desktop or Finder sidebar.
  4. Windows: In My Computer.
  5. Drag the iTunes folder (that you backed up earlier) from your external drive to where you want it on your internal drive. We recommend that you put the iTunes folder back into its default location.
  6. Hold down the Option key (Mac) or Shift key (Windows) while opening iTunes.
  7. When you see a message that asks you to Choose iTunes Library, click Choose Library.
  8. Choose the iTunes folder (that you dragged in step 3) from your internal drive.
  9. Mac: Click Choose.
  10. Windows: Click Open.
  11. Choose the iTunes Library.itl file inside.
