Yes it's this one again but all I can find is instructions for iPhone, iPad when my problem is only on iMac!!

Rebuild the selected mailbox
Mail>Mailbox>Rebuild

Rebuild mailboxes in Mail on Mac - Apple Support
Try re-indexing the mailboxes. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.
Reindex messages For El Capitan, try looking in V3. Sierra use V4. High Sierra use V5.

I am waiting to see but I think the problem has been solved by Rebuilding—is that what you meant—the mailbox. Thanks to leroydouglas for that. If it doesn't work, I'll follow your advice.
