Consumer Reports CONFIRMS existence of hardware related antenna problem

Apple you need to bite the bullet and recall these phones otherwise you're going to suffer tarnished brand image. Don't make this another iMac yellow tint problem and own up to your problems. I'm not upgrading my phone until this issue is confirmed fixed. I'm a long time Apple customer but this is unacceptable.

A lab has verified hardware related antenna issues. Read more: http://blogs.consumerreports.org/electronics/2010/07/apple-iphone-4-antenna-issu e-iphone4-problems-dropped-calls-lab-test-confirmed-problem-issues-signal-streng th-att-network-gsm.html

My phone has the attenuation problem. It's not even a death grip, it's just touching the lower left corner barrier that bridges the two antennas and causes a 2-bar drop in reception. Perhaps it's my skin's natural acidity and conductivity that I was born with coupled with my particular climate and humidity levels that I live in that causes this. Perhaps you are just lucky, or you live in a "7-bar" coverage area, so attenuation doesn't affect you in perceptible levels. But whatever it is, it's a real problem, and it's not overblown.

It's becoming a bigger deal than it should be DIRECTLY because of Apple's stance on the issue, and their naturally arrogant PR. That being said, I still love my iPhone because I primarily use it as a computing and internet/asynchronous communication device first, and phone second. Most people who are ****** are phone 1st, everything else 2nd kind of folks. I imagine if I talked on the phone a lot, i'd be more ****** at having to hold this thing delicately without a case, just to keep a call going. That *****, and it's a real problem.

The aggravation is exacerbated by the fact that Apple could have stopped all this by giving out their bumpers, instead of charging $29 for them. ****, even make them $1 to cover their costs. But no. We get silence and deleted threads. Most people would not tolerate that from other companies, but somehow we expect it from Apple.

Kind of crazy, really.

Everyone that thinks somehow that an RF issue isn't fixable by software needs to reference a company called vanu.com, and see what kind of radio work is being done in software.

I have to comment on this point. Sure Vanu is doing cool things with Software Radio but that's an entirely different technology than is embedded in the iPhone 4 (or to my knowledge any existing cell phone). That's like saying because my Sirius XM radio can pick up satellites that GM should be able to send me a software patch to make my FM radio in my 2001 Cavalier do the same thing.

I flew to Paris on June 15th and missed the pre-order. I tried to order from Paris on June 24th, but my order kept getting rejected. I had to order from AT&T because I wanted two iPhones. Now, I am glad that my order was delayed. I had time to read all the feedback and make a more informed decision. Last week, I ordered one phone rather than two. I will see how the phone works for me, and then I will either order a second phone or return the phone.

I do not see why this as such an emotional issue. Apple is the new Microsoft. They have been heavy-handed on problems and delivery issues with other products. This behavior should come as no surprise. If you do not like your new phone, just return it. That is what I will do. Apple makes attractive products that function better and are more reliable than average. Apple does not live up to the image that it projects, and that can be a hard realization for some. I will keep buying Apple products as long as the pricing is reasonable and they function well for me. Everyone is still in the 30 day window, right? Vote with your money.

There is a lot of good information on this thread. I am grateful for these contributions and relieved that Apple did not delete this thread.

They haven't even admitted to the problem, and have announced no plans for a Firmware update to fix any of the problems that are well known to everyone. The other companies you noted would man up and fix the hardware on existing units which is something Apple has proved they have no intention of doing.

If a firmware update fixes your problem, what do you care about changed hardware?

I withdraw my previous "sheesh" and substitute "moron!" for it.
