Finder 'sort by kind' not working

Hi everyone, I have a MacBook Pro in macOS Mojave but the files in finder could not be sorted by kind; all the pdf and docx documents are both placed in the 'other' section. I have tried reinstalling the operating system but it didn't work. Is there any way I could fix this?

You have grouped by Kind, not sorted. If you want to Sort, set the group by to None, and Sort by Kind using the Option key when you press the button. Or, use cmd-j.

However, it appears your Spotlight index is not identifying those types of documents correctly.

Depends on what metadata is set for those files. That is where Spotlight gets the info to categorize them.

I don't know if the Genius Bar can help, but perhaps.

All of mine group correctly, PDF, Word docx and Excel workbooks.

You can look at the metadata by typing this into Terminal, leave a space after, then drag a file into Terminal. Select the Terminal window and hit return.

Unless you like your documents displayed by different categories, you might choose to do what I have done.

Finder : Preferences : General : New Finder windows show: [house icon w/your short username ↕︎]

Finder: Preferences : Sidebar [√] house icon with your user name

Finder : Preferences : Advanced : Keep folders on top: [√] On Desktop

Finder : Preferences : Advanced : When performing a search: [Search the Current Folder ↕︎]

Open a Finder Window, and press ⌘-J to show view options. I have mine set like the following which shows a Finder window with alphabetically sorted folders first, and followed by alphabetically sorted documents by kind (e.g all .html are together, all .txt are together, etc.). I happen to prefer the icon Finder view:
