How do I stop TextEdit from opening any document?

Is there a way to disable or uninstall TextEdit?

By default, TextEdit will open .txt and .rtf documents. You can always perform a get info on these documents, and from that panel's Open With section, change it from TextEdit to your preferred application. Then click the Change All… button. Know beforehand what application is appropriate to open the .rtf extension though (e.g. Word, Pages, Bean, etc.).

Do not remove applications installed by the operating system.
