Apple does not offer an iCloud backup service for Macs (they do for iPhones and other iOS devices).
They do have iCloud Photos which will sync photos from the Photos app to iCloud -- see: Set up and use iCloud Photos - Apple Support
and iCloud Drive which will sync some files to iCloud -- see: iCloud: What is iCloud Drive?
and iCloud Drive FAQ - Apple Support
and Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive - Apple Support
Note that the above do have the advantage of making an offsite copy but that any changes that you make to the synced data on your Mac (intentionally or accidentally) will be synced to iCloud and that, while there is a recovery period, your data can be lost if you don't notice it in time.
You can verify that any of the above have synced by using a computer internet browser and logging in to icloud.com.
