Unknown photos in Apple Watch memory

I have a new Apple Watch. On the device, in General>About, it shows 15 Photos on the device/in memory, however, the album the watch is synced to has no photos. Going to the photos app on the watch also shows no photos. I cannot determine where it is getting the information & how to remove it.

Apple Watch Series 3, watchOS 5

Synced album is set to “Favorites”, which has 0 pictures. Watch was factory-sealed brand new.

I have a similar situation (but I don’t care too much because it isn’t breaking anything, just a puzzle for a rainy day job). My photo storage shows as 9 on the watch, but is really empty. Maybe if we try pointing at an album which has some pictures it will resolve.

I suspect this might be a bug, and the displayed counter is just picking up a random number because there is no album explicitly selected. That would have no immediate bad effects, but uninitialized variables are always undesirable.

Update... Setup your watch face to Photo, pointing at a specific synchronized album which contains a non-zero number of photos. The General/About photo count will then show the number of photos in the album. It looks like a bug which can’t handle the Photo face pointing at an empty album.

Now I just need to sort out some photos I like for the photo I face, rather than the random selection I used for testing.
