I’m not in the first flush of youth (not particularly savvy) and don’t appear able to cancel now that I’m coming to the end of the Dropbox one month free trial. I followed instructions but could not find an option to cancel. If I don’t cancel then I’ll be charged for Dropbox’s minimum monthly option.

What options do you see for it : View, change, or cancel your subscriptions - Apple Support ? If it says it will expire and is only giving you options to resubscribe you've either already cancelled it or it wasn't set to auto-renew.

There are 5 options none is ‘cancel’, consequently, reading your comment would suggest, as you say, I must have already cancelled it. Fingers crossed!
