Several of my favorite keyboard shortcuts, such as switching browser tabs (alt+com+arrows) and selecting whole words in text (shift+alt) and a number of others have stopped working, while others, like shifting between programs or copy and paste work fine. Any advice?

Chrome works for me. Do the keys work in a different user account?

Did you check System Preferences/Keyboard/Shortcuts to see what was set there?
If you have changed major versions of Word (e.g. Office 2011 for Mac to Office 2016 for Mac), what does Word Help menu, or the other application menu items show for the functionality that you seek.
Perhaps Microsoft has changed some keyboard shortcuts on you, Preferences options, or even Service (System Preferences : Keyboard : Shortcuts : Services) items that Word adds, but may currently be disabled? If you are still attempting to use Office 2008/2011 for Mac, neither application suite was ever tested on High Sierra or Mojave by Microsoft.
Word is a commercial Word processing application, and not intended as a text editor.

Chrome. And it it worked just a couple of hours ago. No idea what changed.
Sorry, the marking whole words in Word (and other text editors) is Shift+alt+arrows. I also used to be able to move the cursor whole words at a time (I'm an editor, it's how I edit and proof text, so it's super annoying), which was Alt+arrows and that doesn't work either. But **** and up and down works find to mark whole lines. Weird.
Like I said, the problem is in Word, Chrome, and Firefox. My Word was updated to the latest version last week, and all my software on my macbook is up to date. This change (like I said, they worked before and are a part of the way I've worked for the last five years, making their loss very frustrating) seems to happened by itself.

I don't think the user account is the issue because the cursor shortcuts I mentioned above don't work in Chrome, Word, or Firefox.
Well then, don't test it with a different user. Perhaps someone else will come up with an idea. Good luck though.
FWIW, (shift+alt) alone won't do anything, they are both modifier keys and need another key or mouse click to do anything. What browser are you using? Command Option Right/Left Arrow works in Firefox.
Five years ago would have been Office 2008 or 2011 for Mac, as Office 2016 for Mac was not initially released until July 2015. As with Apple and macOS, Microsoft has, and will make changes to their product that does not adhere to past functionality. Google Chrome is Google's problem child, and not something that Apple shares responsibility or development concern.
Some keyboard shortcuts stopped working, others are fine. What gives?
