iPod Touch 2G restore from backup failed with 102 rename error

My iPod Touch 2G 32GB failed tonight unexpectedly went into restore mode when I took it out of my bag. So I restored via iTunes and agreed to restoring this mornings backup. iTunes say it cannot restore "due to an error". No error number. When I check in the console I see the following errors:

AppleMobileBackup[1683] ERROR: Restore message response: 102 rename error: No such file or directory (2) at path "/var/mobile/Library/SMS/sms.db.restored" (com.apple.MobileBackup.ErrorDomain/102)

Funny, but the iPod Touch cannot do have SMS, so why is it restoring it? The directory does not exist on my iMac.

If anyone could help or recommend how to fix that would be much appreciated as I would like to get all my data back! I did try going into Time Machine and grabbing an older backup from last week, but that failed too.

iMac (Intel Core Duo), Mac OS X (10.6.4), Mac Mini (Core 2 Duo)

Please go here: http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
Select your device and download a firmware version; 4.0,3.1.3 etc.

After downlaoded
Head to iTunes and go to the "update" button, SHIFT+CLICK it and choose location of the firmware you downloaded, then choose it then click OK then wait till it "updates" the firmware, after it's complete try to RESTORE it, which should fix it up.

Good news i have figured out how to get the backup back onto the ipod touch. The trick was to delete the sms backup then the restore will go through and error at end but all files will be back on ipod(except the sms one)!!
Please backup the folder(the one with the crazy name that stores backup data) to a safe location just in case it doesn’t work.
I used the windows mac and linux program “iphone backup extractor” by reincubate. select the backup and extract the file in Library/SMS/sms.db
The extracted file will be wherever the iphone backup that you loaded in it will be in the Library/SMS folder. Find the size of the sms.db and find the file in the big file of really long file names.(order them by size).when you find it open it with notepad or text edit(mac) and ensure they are the same. If they are not keep looking. when you find the file move the file to a safe location(in case this doesn’t work). Start or restart itunes right click your device(in the left hand sidebar) and attempt restore if it fails insure you selected the right file(the mondified one in itunes) also insure you moved the correct file by ensuring it is the same as the extracted sms file opened in notepad or text edit Please respond with results.

Good Luck

This was a huge help to me and fixed by restore from backup problem on my iPod Touch 3G 32 GB. I might add that my restore did succeed but it still displayed an error message in itunes along the lines that not everything was restored. Thanks for the hard work!

This worked great for me as well. I've been having trouble with syncing and restoring ever since upgrading to iOS 4.0. When I upgraded to iOS 4.0.2, I got the unknown error when trying to restore the backup made prior to the upgrade. This worked great. I removed the sms.db file after finding it in the backup folder, ran the restore, recieved the error about the ipod being unable to be restored because some files were missing. But all the data was added back to the ipod. This is great stuff!

Let's hope that Apple takes not and realizes that this is an issue and they remove the SMS file from the iPod Touch builds in future releases.

Hello. Do you know if you the exact same problem as described here. After restoring do you get an error message popup with no error code.if so this might help you get started

step 1 would be to make sure that have a file in your "C:\Users\ReplaceUserNameHere\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" right click hit properties and determine if the are larger than 2 mb in size.if any of them are then that is the one which has your data in it if multiple are larger use the newest one. afeter identifing the folder try to flollow the steps in my previous post(the long one) sorry for the confusion 🙂
