Seeking advice re: putting Microsoft Word on old MacBookPro

My usual PC is down so I'm using an old MacBookPro. It has no Microsoft Office software but I need Word to do my work. What version of Word do you recommend installing on the MacBook? I'm also trying to keep costs low and I heard there's a free version of Microsoft Word that I could install. True? If so, where do I find it and are there down sides to it? Thanks!

We have no idea what model/year computer you have so it is impossible to say what versions of Microsoft Office are compatible. Microsoft Help Community.

There are no free versions of Microsoft Office/Word. If you find such a free deal the product is pirated and illegal to use.

There is a free product that is mostly compatible with Microsoft Office called LibreOffice. 100% compatibility is not included in LibreOffice but it is free and a good alternative.

Thanks so much for your reply, Bob!

It's helpful already to learn from you that there are no free versions of Msoft Office/Word. I've been using Google Docs and saving files and reopening them as .docx. That works pretty well but the formatting becomes unpredictable and because I don't have the real Msoft Word on my laptop I can't count on what I'm sending out to look right.

Anyway, the laptop is a MacBook Pro, 13-inch, manufactured in 2011. Its operating system is macOS High Sierra 10.13.6. Re: Word I'm seeking 100% compatibility because it's for professional use and I need to know much better than I do at this point what the products I'm producing look like when clients open them. So, it looks like I'll probably need to buy a version of Office from Msoft. Thanks again!
