10.14.5 - Network Connectivity Issues

I wanted to report a slew of issues, after talking to tech support chat, they couldn't offer a resolution either. I have been pulling my hair out for over a week and I feel the 10.14.5 update may be the root cause. Up until today, I have been unsuccessful searching in here, Reddit, and other groups to see if anyone is having the issue. Today, I saw 2 posts made in the last hour with network issues post install. Since they were one sentence a piece, I wanted to offer as much detail as possible:

Background:

I work in the IT department for a company that has a number of MacBook Pros (2015 Retnas and the 2017+ redesigns), Macbook Airs, and the iMac.

The problem has been reported on all but the iMac. This has not been isolated to any one model.

Issue 1:

Computer will connect to the network both on Ethernet or Wifi and receive an IP address. No network traffic happens. As part of the troubleshooting I have done the following:

  • DNS Flush (While pining google terminal went from RTO's to a very dirty ping after the flush)
  • Local IP addresses can be pinged
  • Uninstalling our AntiVirus/VPN Software (We use FortiClient).
  • Deleted the Network Adapter in System Preferences, re-add the adapter
  • Deleted the Known Wifi Networks and re-joined them
  • Blew out any certificates in the keychain provided by our internal network and re-installed when it pushed.
  • Disabled Location Based Services (found a thread saying LBS scans impact the ping for some users)
  • Only solution I have found with people who I THINK have the same issue have been rolling back to High Sierra. I'm not going down that path.
  • Rebooting appears to solve the issue temporally.
  • Watch Activity monitor to see if any CPU spikes happen when RTO's happen. No abnormal CPU usage.

Issue 2ish:

Partially related to issue 1. Specifically the dirty pings. User doesn't lose all network connectivity.

  • User complains of frequent and slow internet drops. Continuous ping to our gateway will have fluctuating ping times ranging from .400 ms to 4,000 ms followed by RTO's.
  • Only solution appears to be a reboot.

One thing to add that is in common is the users have this problem both at home and in the office. I have not had a single Windows user complain about this issue.

The issue began about a week ago. I have looked at any changes that have been done with our internal systems, access points and other devices. I am having a hard time with thinking it is something other than the computer itself. The fact that it is widespread only to the Mac in the environment has me thinking the one thing that has changed has been the 10.14.5 update.

One other thing to add, I can't find one thing to re-create the issue. It appears to be at random when this happens.

Hi all to give you an update:

I had an identical MacBook Pro that was not having the issue so I decided to rule out bad hardware and swapped the hard drives. The problem followed the hard drive so I was able to rule out hardware.

I decided to wipe the new hard drive in the users computer and copy documents over. The install of my USB stick was 10.14.3. So far the machine is working properly but it’s not ideal for me to be rolling back with doing clean installs for the other users.

I upgraded my machine to 10.14.6 beta and so far it seems to be doing alright.

I’m pretty convinced this is an issue with 10.14.5.

+1, I think. I don't have your skills on network diagnostics, but mine sounds similar. Running a 2018 Macbook Pro, at home I connect to a Synology NAS and a Mac Mini (High Sierra) via SMB over wifi. All had been fine, but since updating to 10.14.5 a few days ago I can't maintain a connection to either device, and I can't maintain Screen Sharing to the Mac Mini.

In both cases, restarting my MBP allows me to establish an initial connection, but the connection drops after only a couple of minutes and I can't get it back. In Finder the devices just constantly say "Connecting..." but nothing actually happens. In Screen Sharing I get the message "Unable to communicate with “Orac”. Make sure the remote computer is available and the firewall is not blocking screen sharing."

I have another MBP still on 10.14.4, and it still connects perfectly to both devices.

yup, similar issue. i can connect from networked computers if i reboot my desktop, but only get to access a file or 2 before finder crashes and needs a hard reset. if i don't do a reboot on the main desktop, no connection at all. network is non functional. i will add that i can get to internet from all machines, but cannot access ext hd's connected to main desktop.

10.14.4 worked mostly fine, but 10.14.5, ugh---3 installs of update and one reinstall of
