Password auto fills with dots after sleep

Hi - I notice this thread with posts spanning many years with little recent updates so thought would post again. My iMac, after sleep mode, autofills the password which is not my password. A series of dots appear in the field. The only way to successfully log on is to hard shut down the mac and restart - obviously not a viable solution. I have changed wireless keyboards to see if it would make any different, fully update OS etc, perform complete reset of the machine... I'm now out of ideas.

Is this a sign of a more serious fault?

I have Sophos installed on machine and there is no sign of any concern.

FYI - I'm running macOS Mojave 10.14.5

Any help is gratefully received.

iMac 21.5", macOS 10.14

Besides the excellent advice you're already received boot into Safe Mode and test the sleep mode from there. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing some system cache cleaning, volume verifying and directory repairing.
