You will need to erase the iPad by using the latest version of iTunes (v12.9.x) on your home computer, following the directions in this link EXACTLY: If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support

Once you've successfully gotten back in, since you are intending to give the iPad to your son, follow the directions in this to properly prepare it for him to use: What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

thank you for your help. It did not work though. I could switch off the ipad by slinding it off, then followed the instructions. It did not work with restore so i started again and picked update. That worked and my opad looked like and update was occurring. When it seemed to be done, the text “your ipad is disabled came after the apple. It says to try again in 2 months, 3 weeks etc. new is that i can’t switch it off at all now, so i can’t even try the process of restoring it again. This is exhausting. Any ideas? And thanks again for taking the time to respond.....
