FWIW, I have a 5K iMac and an iMac Pro and I can't watch purchased 4K movies on them either. I believe it has to do with DRM support but don't quote me.
This is from a description of a 4K movie in iTunes…
That makes no sense to me. If the new iMacs are being touted as all about viewing/editing 4K video for Final Cut, etc, they should play back 4K content purchased via ones Apple ID/iTunes account. And if I had dropped $$$$ for an iMac Pro instead, I’d be even more concerned.
Macs have never been TV's, Apple has never advertised them as TVs so I'm a little confused as to why you might think you could watch TV on your Mac.
Your Apple TV is designed to play content on a television, if you bought a Apple TV 4K and you want to watch 4K content from the Apple TV, at a minimum that will require a 4K TV and 4K content on the Apple TV. The good news is 4K TVs have dropped in price and can be stunning to view. Your iMac is a computer and it is designed to do computing tasks.
I see your point. However, If all the rest of my iTunes purchases (music/podcasts,etc) are available on my computer and other devices to watch/listen to, why aren’t the 4K movies I purchase via iTunes available?
It’s just digital content. And the iMac is certainly capable of playing it.
I totally gst the DRM/copyright/illegal sharing/ copying ssues though. That makes sense to me.
Oh, I know. :). I have the 4K Apple TV and a lovely Sony 4K tv😎😎.
Because Apple doesn't support purchased 4k movies on Macs. Just on Apple TV 4K.
Just to add, if one could stream 4K movies to their computer they could also make high quality copies which would violate all sorts of copyright laws.
Well, ok, that part makes sense 😎
Indeed.

Exactly. It has nothing to do with a Mac not being a TV. 😎
