How do I retrieve the password on my kids phone? He forgot his password to get on the phone.

If you're talking about his passcode to unlock the screen and regain access:

If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support

If you're talking about something different, please better describe what "password" you meant.
