It is possible to force quit an app which is misbehaving or unresponsive,
Press and hold the side button until the Power Off screen appears. Then press and hold the Digital Crown to terminate the app which was foreground when you started.
However, this is not a recommended solution and in most cases where things are misbehaving you will get a better result by forced reset on the watch. (Press and hold the Digital Crown and side button together, until the Apple logo appears).
If you are trying to close an app because it is unwanted, be aware the watch will probably restart it automatically in the background. The correct solution for unwanted apps is to uninstall them, or simply let the watch manage the process automatically.

No, they are not. They are not really running in the background, just like on the iPhone. They are suspended, and are just available to use again more easily. Actually, force closing an app and then starting it again uses more battery than opening it from suspension. The iPhone and Apple Watch are configured to handle RAM usage, and will allow apps to be in suspension until the device needs more RAM for a running app, or starting a new one. Force closing makes the phone work harder than handling the RAM on its own.
Press the side button. And then swipe left and close the apps that are running. You will see a red X (remove)
Clicking the side button and swiping left -- then ckicking the red X worked for me.
Apps running in the background use battery power I presume?
There are very few "running" apps on either the iPhone or Apple Watch. The method you are describing is to remove them from the recently used list and this is not recommended.
Sorry by whom? Apple say how to do this in their support page?

As far as I am aware that is for the List view of recently used apps, and it only removes the entry from the list.
Yes, but it only removes the pointer from the list format of the dock, that’s a decluttering action rather like deleting a desktop icon on a computer. As I understand it removing the dock entry doesn’t terminate or uninstall the app.
Yes it does an close the app down. Similar to iPhone X swiping up and removing running apps.
As you can only have 10 in the dock anyway. I can see the need for clearing it. You can have your favourites instead. As this is permanently there can be a pain if you use others. As for closing the apps as I understand it it similar to closing apps on iPhone, but I beg to differ. Which model of Apple Watch do you have Branta_uk? Personally have the first generation and Nike 4.
Cool...Thank you!!!
You're welcome.
I’m using Series 3 cellular.
Yes, I agree. It just removed them from the Dock. Was not sure how Apple handled the Apps on the Watch but many of you are helping me to understand. Thanks for all the posts.
I have a new Series 4 44mm, GPS only.
