Samsung pad & will my watch receive texts if icloud messages is turned off

This is a really complicated one! My mom is deaf which means I have a bunch of devices for her.

She has

An apple watch series 3 (no cellular)

An Iphone

a Galaxy Tab A (size of an ipad mini) with cellular plan

I want her Galaxy tab to be able to receive the same texts as her phone -

But the only way I could find is to disable icloud messages and just use regular sms on the phone then the pad will let me use an ATT app which will duplicate the messages.

There is a reason she can't use the ipad mini with cellular that is too long to go into. ;)

Thanks for any advice.

Laura

I will ask her about the watch, right now I think she uses is mostly for the watch feature, the sos feature (if she falls) and to vibrate to let her know when she gets a text message on her phone. She received the watch for free from a government subsidized program for deaf/blind, low income customers.

I will discuss this with her in more depth. She just got the phone and the watch from this program and she is pretty overwhelmed with technology right now.

It would be possible to change her to android in the long run I suppose,

thanks for all the advise this helped me tremendously .

You will not be able to use the Samsung to mirror iMessages from the phone. As you have found, only SMS can be done with assistance from AT&T. The only way to mirror all messages from the iPhone is with an iOS device like an iPad, and the iPad would not need to be cellular, it could be wi-fi only, since it would use the iPhone to handle the sending and receiving of messages.

If the Watch is set to mirror the phone, it will still get the messages/notifications. But, you mention wanting to get messages on the Samsung. That can only be the SMS, since you would use an AT&T app. I don't want you to get into the reason she cannot use the Mini, but it would be less complicated if she did. So, is it the notifications that is the problem because she is deaf, or is it something else. The iPhone and Watch should both take care of her messaging issues, but since you mention the Samsung, it is almost as if it also has to do with the ability to read the messages. Is it that important that she get the messages on the Samsung? If it is, then your only option is to turn off iMessage. However, if she has friends that she messages that have iOS devices, it is going to complicate that communication by turning off iMessage, especially if she has been using it for a while.

So she has the phone which she can use to text and sometimes do emails on when she is on the bus.

She uses Lyft as well and is having a hard time seeing it on her phone - She has an 8+.

She is totally deaf and legally blind and 77 so there is only so much she can do before she starts getting panicked.

We were going to get her an ipad mini with cellular to do the Lyft app but then another wrench was thrown in.

Google has a new app in beta called Live Transcribe. The deaf community online are raving about it. You talk into the phone/tablet and it transcribes it into text. Yes I know the iPhone does that, yes I have tried every app available on the app store since the beginning of time and this blows them all away.

And it is only available on Android.

Now we could wait as I am sure this will eventually roll out to Apple but honestly, it is about her quality of life.

When she is with a group of deaf friends they all use it and they love it.

We went to a family event last week in a noisy restaurant (10 of us) and passed the one Android phone around the table and she was able to tell what was going on around her and participate in many conversations. I can't tell you how happy she was.

So I decided to splurge on the Galaxy, and figured we could use it for LYFT and the transcribe app. I just don't know about the Lyft app as they sometimes text you. I was hoping she would not have to juggle devices but maybe we just won't set up the texting on the pad and leave her stuff alone.

Okay, I understand the predicament, and also the desire for quality of life issues. To be honest, I would have to say given the availability of the apps you need, you would probably be better off for her to have an Android device, but that would leave the Watch out of the equation. Does she really use it that much, since she wouldn't be able to really read it?

I'm a user like you and none of us here are Apple employees, so no one here is going to insist you purchase Apple, nor are we going to fault you if Android is a better fit for your situation. But for her to get texts on the tablet, I'm guessing you need to have an Android phone, or you are going to have to deal with the issues of others using an iPhone and trying to iMessage her if you turned that off. I think you are going to have to think this through and see what best meets her needs. Good luck.

You're welcome. Good luck with making the decisions. There is a lot for you to look at here, especially since the two devices were provided by a program. You could go with the Apple system, but you seem to be experiencing issues with things like VoiceOver, which is what reads what is on the phone, and dictation to help write the texts. I know that you will do what is best for her. Take care, and I'm glad I was able to at least give you some food for thought.
