No unlock for unlock phone

I bought unlock iPhone XS from Best Buy last year. Same day, I tested with Cricket wireless SIM for the brand new unlock iPhone XS. Once I restarted the phone, I could not use other provider but only cricket wireless. I called : Apple, Best Buy and Cricket Wireless but could not solve this issue. Finally, Cricket Wireless customer service said, this iPhone can be unlocked after 6 months. Today, exactly 6 month, I chat with Cricket Wireless customer service to unlock phone, because there was an error when I requested unlock code. Customer Service advised me to call Apple Company because they cannot find unlock code for this iPhone. I just want to find out : Apple care can check which provider is locking this phone ?

Only Apple sells purely unlocked iPhones, the Best Buy phones lock to the first cell provider that you use (in your case Cricket). At some time in the last 6 months did you have this iPhone replaced? If you did that may account for Cricket's confusion (not that they need any help to be confused). Yes you can call AppleCare and tell them you just want to know if your iPhone is locked and if yes who is it locked to.
